Top 100 Baby Names of 2014
The table on this page is the complete top 100 for 2014, taken directly from U.S. Social Security Administration baby name records. In that year the file records 3,706,376 births in total, 1,785,937 of them girls and 1,920,439 boys, spread across 33,308 distinct name-and-sex combinations that reached the SSA's five-birth release threshold. Emma was the leading girls' name with 20,962 births, a 1.17% share of all recorded girl births, while Noah led the boys with 19,338 births and a 1.01% share. Those two shares are the right starting point for understanding 2014, because they show how much room the single most popular name took up before the rest of the field is considered at all.
Concentration is the second story of 2014. The top ten girls' names together accounted for 8.5 percent of recorded girl births, and the top ten boys' names for 8.5 percent of boy births. The full top 100 girls' names covered 34.0 percent of girl births, which means the remaining share was divided among thousands of less common names listed in the underlying file but below the cut shown here. Years differ enormously on this measure: in the late nineteenth century a handful of names covered a very large fraction of all births, while in recent decades the top of the table is much flatter and the long tail of distinct names is far longer. Comparing the concentration figures on this page with those of a year a generation earlier or later is one of the most informative single comparisons in the whole dataset.

How to read the 2014 table
Each rank is calculated within one sex only, exactly as the SSA publishes it: girls are ranked against girls and boys against boys, ordered by birth count, with ties shown in the order produced by sorting counts from highest to lowest. A name used for both sexes therefore appears twice, once in each column, with two independent counts and two independent ranks. Spelling is treated literally by the SSA, so similar-looking names are separate entries and their counts are never merged on this site either. That rule matters most near the top of modern tables, where two spellings of a similar-sounding name can each hold a top-100 place while their combined total would rank higher than either does alone.
The counts themselves come from applications for Social Security cards, tabulated by year of birth rather than year of application, which is why the historical file can extend back to 1880 even though the modern card system came later. Names recorded fewer than five times in a year and sex are withheld from the public file, so the smallest names of 2014 are not visible here and the distinct-name total above counts only combinations at or above that threshold. Nothing on this page estimates or fills in those withheld counts. Where a name in the table has its own page on this site, it is linked, and those pages carry the name's full 1880 to 2024 history, its peak year, and its decade-by-decade record.
For the wider picture, place 2014 between its neighbours: the years index lists every year page on this site, the decade pages total ten years at a time, and the 2024 rankings show the most recent table in the same format for direct comparison. The leading names of 2014 can also be followed individually through the A–Z name index, where the all-time top 100 names each have a dedicated history page built from the same records.

Disclaimer: Baby Name Data publishes statistics drawn from U.S. Social Security Administration baby name records. Figures are counts of Social Security card applications by year of birth and are shown for general information only. Counts below five in any year, sex, or state are not released by the SSA and are not estimated here. Nothing on this page is advice about what to name a child.
