Baby Names A–Z: The All-Time Top 100

This index lists the one hundred names with the largest combined birth totals in U.S. Social Security Administration records from 1880 through 2024, counting both sexes together. Each name links to a dedicated page carrying that name's complete statistical history: its total births, its first and most recent recorded years, its peak year with the count and rank reached in that year, a decade-by-decade table of births and best ranks, a sampled rank history showing count, rank, and share together, and the split between its use for girls and for boys. The combined ranking used for this index is explained on the methodology page: because the SSA ranks each sex separately, combining both sides is a deliberate editorial choice for building this all-time list, and every name page still reports its ranks from the single-sex table where those ranks were actually earned.

Reading the list itself is instructive. The top of it is dominated by names that held very high ranks for many decades at once, not by names with one spectacular year, because a combined total above a million births can only be built by finishing near the top of an annual table year after year across several generations. Further down the list, the character changes: names with shorter, sharper peaks appear alongside steady names that never quite led a year but rarely left the top fifty. Following any single name from this index into its decade table shows which of those two patterns it follows, and the year pages show the annual tables in which its biggest counts were recorded against the competing names of the same year.

Names outside this all-time hundred are not missing from the underlying data: they appear in the year tables, the decade tables, and the state tables throughout this site, ranked in the years and places where they actually competed.

Disclaimer: Baby Name Data publishes statistics drawn from U.S. Social Security Administration baby name records. Figures are counts of Social Security card applications by year of birth and are shown for general information only. Counts below five in any year, sex, or state are not released by the SSA and are not estimated here. Nothing on this page is advice about what to name a child.
